Airtime refers to how many satellite bytes your hardware device has in its agreed package. This is only relevant to satellite devices and is not related to GSM devices.
Satellite airtime is used by a device in the following ways:
- When it reports its position to the Grid
- When it sends a message to the Grid
- When it triggers a panic alarm, and the subsequent position reports when in panic mode
- When a voluntary check-in is sent from the device
When a device uses its entire package of airtime, it will still continue to work as normal but will begin to incur overages. Overages are explained in this article.
Iridium and Inmarsat satellite packages are costed differently, and as such it is best to speak to your account manager to learn more.
